As we fast approach autumn and daylight hours are quickly dwindling, you may be worried about how to get enough vitamin D while staying safe in the sun. Luckily, our newest product, Amma Life 5% CBD and Vitamin D oil, provides you with your recommended daily dose of cannabinoids and vitamin D; so even if you can’t get out in the sun, you can still get enough of both for optimal health and a natural immune-boost.
Vitamin D and COVID-19
In these pandemic times, recent research is showing that Vitamin D deficiency may have a negative impact on our immune system’s ability to fight off viruses. Further research is being done to explore this correlation, especially the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and respiratory symptoms.
This has been a challenging year for many of us, particularly for maintaining our health and wellbeing. At Amma Life, we want to provide our customers with the best ways to support their immune system. CBD and Vitamin D3 work together to optimise the immune system in numerous ways, such as supporting our general wellbeing and respiratory health. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, meaning that it does not dissolve in water and is absorbed best in your bloodstream when paired with high-fat foods or oil carriers such as hempseed oil which is the main ingredient in our CBD oil products.
Vitamin D rich food
Only a handful of foods are rich enough in vitamin D to provide us with the required daily dose. These include:
- Oily fish such as salmon, canned tuna, mackerel and sardines
- Cod liver oil
- Egg yolks
- Almond milk
- Soy milk
- Orange juice
- Rice drinks
- Fortified foods such as some margarines and cereals
You would need to consume some of these foods regularly on a daily basis, and even then many of those listed will not provide enough for the recommended minimum amount of 10-20 micrograms per day. Whereas, one drop of Amma Life’s new CBD and vitamin D oil contains 16 micrograms of vitamin D and 2 milligrams of CBD. The form of vitamin D added to the Amma Life CBD Oil is a Vitamin D3. Studies show that this form of Vit D seems to be more efficient when being absorbed and utilised by the body and offers increased bio-availability. Our body also creates vitamin D3 through a series of conversions that take place in the body.
The right time to get out in the sun
To get maximum vitamin D, it is best to spend time in the sun between the hours of 10am and 3pm from April to September. During this time, UVB rays from the sun are at their most intense and it is these rays that are required for the body to create vitamin D.
However, UVB also carries a number of health risks, including sunburn, eye damage, heat stroke, skin cancer and premature skin ageing, so it is important not to get too much. Using factor 30 SPF sun cream will protect the body from up to 97% of UV rays, so this is useful if you are spending long hours in the sun, but not helpful if you are only spending short amounts of time in the sun.
How long to spend in the sun
The amount of time you can safely spend in the sun to get your daily dose of vitamin D depends on a number of factors, such as what time of year it is, how much clothing you are wearing and how dark your skin is. People with darker skin will need to spend longer in the sun than those with lighter skin. This is because people with darker skin have more melanin in their skin than those with lighter skin.
How skin colour effects vitamin D
Melanin acts as a natural barrier from the sun to protect the skin from excess sunlight and defend against skin cancers and sunburn. It also means people with darker skin are more likely to be deficient in vitamin D, particularly in the winter months in the UK.
Taking a supplement such as Amma Life’s CBD and vitamin D oil could help those deficient in vitamin D to get their required daily dose and optimise their immune system with CBD at the same time.
The best way to get vitamin D from the summer sun without experiencing the harmful effects of too much sun, is to position yourself in the shade of the midday sun (11am-2pm), cover up or wear sun cream. When the summer months are gone, between October and March, the best way to get vitamin D is to take a daily supplement such as Amma Life’s CBD and vitamin D oil, and eat vitamin D rich foods.
