What is CBD?

CBD, short for Cannabidiol, is a naturally occurring molecule found in hemp, belonging to a group of over 100 special compounds known as cannabinoids.

How CBD Works

The discovery of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) spurred a breakthrough of understanding about CBD. The ECS relates to the body’s complex network of neurotransmitters (endocannabinoids) and special receptor sites found in the brain, central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and the gut. The endocannabinoid system was only discovered in the 1990s. It has a crucial function, which is to maintain health.

CBD and the Endocannabinoid System

Certain cannabinoids can have a direct effect on the ECS. Hence the system’s name – endo meaning ‘within’, and cannabinoid to describe ‘the compounds found in the plant’.

The ECS was discovered when researchers were exploring how THC, the psychoactive cannabinoid, creates its effect in the body. Modern research reveals that CBD, rather than directly activating our endocannabinoid receptors, may play a more indirect role by supporting our ECS.

A regular intake of CBD supplements can help our endocannabinoid system to function optimally.

The Entourage Effect

Seeking a great quality CBD supplement is about much more than the content of CBD. At Amma Life we are passionate about the use of whole plant extracts in our products. This refers to whole plant CBD oils, CBD paste & other CBD supplements that contain CBD, plus other compounds found in the natural plant, which includes a spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes in trace elements. The ‘whole plant CBD oil’ or ‘Broad Spectrum CBD paste’  is where you are getting the whole plant and all of its hemp goodness!

Buying whole plant CBD containing the broadest spectrum of compounds is preferable. The entourage effect refers to the synergy between all the cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids in the plant which work together like an orchestra, each one supporting and complementing each other. While CBD oil may take the lead position, it’s still important that we include all the other components as well, rather than CBD isolate.

Terpenes and the Entourage Effect

The harmonious interaction between cannabinoids and terpenoids gives rise to the Entourage Effect. Esteemed neurologist Ethan Russo, M.D., has extensively researched the compounds present in the hemp plant and their functions within the body. One of his studies delves into the synergy between cannabinoids and a selection of vital terpenes: myrcene, limonene, pinene, caryophyllene, linalool, and terpinolene – which are among the most significant terpenes. Russo elaborates on how these cannabinoid compounds mutually influence each other’s mechanisms.

Terpenes are the aromatic oils responsible for the distinct aroma found in hemp and various other herbs. Their presence plays an essential role in the overall hemp experience and contributes to the characteristic scent of the plant.

CBD Safety and Legality

At Amma Life, we prioritise your well-being, and we want to assure you that CBD is generally considered safe and non-toxic.

A reputable World Health Organisation report has unequivocally concluded that Cannabidiol (CBD) has no potential for mis-use, causes no harm, nor does CBD produce any significant side effects.

Due to its excellent safety profile, CBD is not classified as a controlled substance. If you’re wondering about the legal status of CBD oil, we can confidently say that it is legal when extracted from hemp plants that are legally grown and licensed. To comply with legal UK regulations, our CBD products contain less than 1mg  and 0.1% THC and are all within permissible limits. Rest assured, our products are carefully crafted to meet all legal requirements while providing you with the finest CBD experience possible.

What is CBD oil?

CBD oil is derived from broad spectrum CBD extracts and blended with a carrier oil, such as hemp seed oil or olive oil, resulting in a versatile and easy-to-use product. Typically consumed by placing a few drops under the tongue using a dropper, CBD oil offers a convenient method of ingestion.

Alternatively, CBD extracts, commonly referred to as CBD paste, are also available. These extracts have a denser and thicker consistency, offering another option for those seeking different consumption methods. CBD extracts contain the broader spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes for optimum effect.
