What is CBD?

CBD is the molecule Cannabidiol.

CBD is one of over 100 special compounds called cannabinoids found in Cannabis Sativa and hemp.

How CBD Works

The discovery of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) spurred a breakthrough of understanding about CBD. The ECS relates to the body’s complex network of neurotransmitters (endocannabinoids) and special receptor sites found in the brain, central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and the gut. The endocannabinoid system was only discovered in the 1990s. It has a crucial function, which is to seek homeostasis & balance for our body & mind.

Almost every biological function is regulated by the endocannabinoid system; everything from sleep, appetite, pain, our immune system, reproduction and mood. Endocannabinoid deficiency is linked to many 21st century health conditions.

CBD and the Endocannabinoid System

Certain cannabinoids can have a direct effect on the ECS. Hence the system’s name – endo meaning ‘within’, and cannabinoid to describe ‘the compounds found in cannabis’.

The ECS was discovered when researchers were exploring how THC, the psychoactive cannabinoid, creates its effect in the body. Modern research reveals that CBD, rather than activate our endocannabinoid receptors, may play a more indirect effect. CBD seems to inhibit the enzyme responsible for breaking down a key endocannabinoid called anandamide. Therefore, by introducing CBD into the system, anandamide stays around for longer in the body, before being metabolised. This is how CBD could have a boosting effect on our ECS.

A regular intake of CBD supplements can support our endocannabinoid system to function optimally

The Entourage Effect

Seeking a great quality CBD supplement is about much more than the content of CBD. At Amma Life we are passionate about the use of whole plant extracts in our products. This refers to whole plant CBD oils, CBD paste & other CBD supplements that contain CBD, plus other compounds found in the natural plant, which includes a spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes in trace elements. The ‘whole plant CBD oil’ or ‘Full Spectrum CBD paste’  is where you are getting the whole plant and all of its hemp goodness!

Buying whole plant CBD containing the full spectrum of compounds from Cannabis Sativa is preferable. The entourage effect refers to the synergy between all the cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids in the plant which work together like an orchestra, each one supporting and complementing each other. While CBD oil may take the lead position, it’s still important that we include all the other components as well, rather than CBD isolate.

Terpenes

When cannabinoids and terpenoids work together, this creates the Entourage Effect. Neurologist Ethan Russo, M.D., has long studied cannabis compounds and their role in the body. In one study he explores how the cannabinoids synergise with a range of terpenes: myrcene, limonene, pinene, caryophyllene, linalool, and terpinolene which are the most significant terpenes. Russo details how cannabinoid compounds influence each other’s mechanisms. Terpenes are the fragrant oils that give cannabis (and other herbs) their unique aroma.

CBD Safety and Legality

There is general agreement that CBD is safe and non-toxic.

A recent World Health Organisation report concluded that Cannabidiol (CBD) has no potential for mis-use, cause any harm, nor does CBD have any side effects.

This is why CBD is not a controlled substance. So if you’re asking yourself the question, “Is CBD oil legal?”, then the answer is a resounding yes. It must be extracted from legally grown and licensed Cannabis Sativa, containing less than 0.2% THC.

What is CBD oil?

CBD oils are CBD extracts that have been mixed with a carrier oil such as olive oil or hemp seed oil and can be taken with a dropper (by adding a few drops under the tongue). You can also buy CBD extracts, otherwise known as CBD paste, which have a much thicker consistency.

Quality Guarantee

At Amma Life, the Cannabis Sativa used is grown through organic methods and uses state of the art extraction methods to make the CBD products.

Supercritical CO2 technique is preferable as it best at preserving the active components leaving no unwanted residues in the final product. We supply lab tests so that you can be confident about how much mg of CBD is in every product.

We also carry out checks to ensure that the CBD products contain no nasty chemicals, mould or heavy metals.
