What is CBG?

What is CBG?

Over the last few years, CBD has exploded onto the scene and grown massively in popularity. Now CBG is making the headlines as another potent cannabinoid. Here at Amma Life we are always listening to what our customers want, so we are excited to introduce our latest new product, CBG oil. But what is it? And how does it differ from CBD?

CBG: the basics

Hemp contains at least 100 compounds, known as cannabinoids. The most commonly known cannabinoid is CBD.
CBGA is the precursor to other cannabinoids. Sometimes referred to as the parent molecule or stem cell, CBGA starts life within the plant as an inactive acid. Over time, this ‘mother cannabinoid’ changes, breaks down and becomes the base molecule from which other key cannabinoids are formed. These cannabinoids are: CBG, CBD, THC and CBC.

CBG vs CBD: what’s the difference?

CBD is one of the most naturally abundant compounds found in the plant. CBG, on the other hand, is a bit more tricky to get hold of, and that’s why you may find it more difficult and expensive to buy. To put this into perspective, experienced farmers, such as Amma Life's partners can yield hemp crops that contain approximately 25% CBD content, making it relatively easy to get hold of when compared to other cannabinoids. But as James Rowland, CEO of Steve’s Goods, explained to Forbes, “If the CBG content of the same crop is only 1%, that means you need to extract 20 times the amount of biomass to get the same amount of CBG out.” That’s why some are dubbing CBG the ‘Rolls Royce’ of cannabinoids.

Starting from the ground up

CBG is also difficult to cultivate. The longer hemp plants mature, the more likely it is for CBGA/CBG to convert into other cannabinoids. This leaves cultivators with a difficult choice: either cultivate early for the express purpose of extracting CBG, or leave the plant to mature for longer in order to utilise it for other means, but risk getting less CBG from it. Farmers are becoming more experimental in order to get the most CBG from plants, by cross breeding and genetically manipulating them.

Choosing the best CBG

With the newly emerging CBG, it is important to be sure that the product you choose is high quality. Make sure to check that your product is:
  • Third party lab tested: This means the product has been independently checked and certified to confirm the contents of the bottle are accurately represented.
  • Amma Life products are generally broad spectrum or CBD isolate for the patches, third-party tested, non-GMO, and grown outdoors in the EU without the use of pesticides. Our CBG oil contains a 50/50 mix of CBG/CBD and uses an organic hempseed oil carrier.

What does CBG do?

World renowned chemist Raphael Mechoulam, recognised that there is plenty of potential for CBG and other cannabinoids to be a treasure trove for our health. Cannabigerol is a cannabinoid  that can support the immune system in a variety of ways, including to support our mental wellbeing and gut health. Similar to CBD, CBG is non-intoxicating (does not get you high).Until now, the compound CBG has only been available in trace elements within the whole plant CBD oils on sale. The Amma Life CBG oil now allows you to be able to consume larger amounts of the CBG cannabinoid to support your wellbeing.
As with the popularity and growth of CBD, CBG will also become more understood over the coming years. At Amma Life we have always promoted whole plant extract CBD oils. Aside from CBD & CBG, there are 100’s of potent cannabinoids in the cannabis plant.
